Michael Wachs, MD is the surgical director of pediatric Liver Transplant and Kidney Transplant Programs at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Having performed over 1,000 liver transplants and 800 kidney transplants in the last 20 years, we can say with certainty that he is an expert on transplants - both in, and out of, the operating room.

Watch Dr. Wachs' share what he believes makes Children's Colorado special.

What’s special to you about working at Children’s Hospital Colorado?

“I enjoy helping sick kids and their families return to normal life. Children’s Colorado is great at that. Our hospital cares for the entire child and the family, from diagnosis to follow-up care, and that’s important to me.”

Why did you want to be a doctor?

“I wanted to be a surgeon so I could work with my hands. I picked transplant surgery because I liked the idea that my skill as a surgeon directly impacts my patient’s success. Transplant patients start out very sick, but with excellent surgical and medical care, they return to normal life shortly after surgery. They can live the rest of their life almost like it never happened.”

Why did you choose pediatric care?

“Giving a sick child a fresh start for a normal life is an amazing feeling. I really enjoy going through the entire process with the parents, getting to know them and their children, and helping them get through one of the most stressful times in their lives.”

What is your favorite hobby to do in your spare time?

“I am happily married with three fabulous daughters. I enjoy swimming, golf and riding my motorcycle. I also love going to live music events.”
