Cayden: A Joyful Myelomeningocele (Spina Bifida) Outcome

As one of the most common types of neural tube defects, myelomeningocele is a congenital birth defect in which a section of the neural tube that runs along the spine fails to close. This open neural tube defect results in babies born with abnormal spinal cord and spinal nerve function.

Christine Kieft learned during her pregnancy that her son had myelomeningocele. That being a very emotional moment, she and her husband knew they would be in good hands once they were referred to the Colorado Fetal Care Center

Family consultation calmed nerves

An appointment was set up as soon as possible after diagnosis, and Christine and her husband were thrilled to work with a multidisciplinary team, where they all met at the same time instead of having to schedule multiple meetings with a variety of physicians.

"We were set up with some of the best doctors the country had to offer. We know we made the right decision for our family by coming here. Our son has had great benefits from having had the myelomeningocele surgery."
