Pulmonary valve stenosis is a condition marked by the inability of the pulmonary valve to open completely. The pulmonary valve is located between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery and allows for blood to flow out of the right ventricle and prevents blood from leaking backward.

How is pulmonary valve stenosis diagnosed?

At the Colorado Fetal Care Center, pulmonary valve stenosis can be identified by fetal echocardiogram as early as 14 weeks gestation.

How is pulmonary valve stenosis treated?

Mild forms of pulmonary valve stenosis may only require careful observation. However, when pulmonary valve stenosis is severe, the right ventricle can become dilated and dysfunctional. Some babies may require a cardiac catheterization after birth to open up the pulmonary valve if the obstruction is critical.
