The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders offers services at Children's Hospital Colorado on the Anschutz Medical Campus and in Colorado Springs. Both of these facilities provide care to children on an inpatient and outpatient basis, with several satellite locations also available throughout the state.

In our state-of-the-art cancer facility in Aurora we provide inpatient care for hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplant patients, along with outpatient clinics that include a large infusion center and anesthesia clinic. In Colorado Springs, there is also a dedicated clinic and state-of-the-art infusion center.

Cancer centers designed to help kids heal

To help minimize the risk of infection, the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders includes many unique features. On the Anschutz Medical Campus, all rooms on the inpatient units are built to protect highly immune-compromised patients (those with weakened immune systems due to cancer or bone marrow transplant treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy). Because these patients are more susceptible to infection, our rooms have special HEPA filtration systems to clean the air.

Other examples of our safe environment include enclosed light fixtures, double-paned windows, extra filters on sinks and ice machines, solid-surface ceiling tiles and non-carpeted flooring – all to decrease the exposure to fungal agents.

In addition to our clean and safe facilities, there are a multitude of spaces that support a caring and healing environment. In both Aurora and Colorado Springs hospitals, we have large playrooms and waiting rooms with a variety of amenities for family use.

About our cancer units and clinics in Aurora

  • The entire 48-bed inpatient unit on Anschutz Medical Campus has HEPA-filtered private rooms and bathrooms to help prevent infection, along with activity areas, consult rooms and family lounges.
  • The Bone Marrow Transplant Inpatient Unit has separate family amenities such as a patient playroom, a patient exercise area, a family lounge and a kitchen.
  • The Outpatient Clinic has a reception area (including a special bone marrow transplant waiting area), intake rooms, consult rooms, exam rooms, procedure rooms, a teen lounge, a family lounge, specially pressurized rooms for patient safety and check-out scheduling stations. Plus, our outpatient clinic provides scheduling for all exams and appointments, which ensures continuity during a patient’s entire outpatient visit.
  • All inpatient and infusion rooms have an Xbox or Nintendo Wii to help pass the time and make the hospital stay a little more fun.
  • The Procedure Clinic is offered five days a week to inpatients and outpatients. Pediatric anesthesiologists administer anesthesia to minimize pain and anxiety associated with bone marrow aspirates and lumbar punctures. This clinic's outpatient location greatly improves efficiency and satisfaction of patients and their families.
  • An Infusion Center is part of the outpatient clinic with private rooms and comfortable infusion chairs, multiple entertainment options, creative therapies and room service for meals. The center is open 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Infusion Center allows many treatments to be delivered on an outpatient basis, rather than requiring overnight hospital stays. Outpatient infusions and transfusions are also given on most holidays and on weekends, allowing patients to avoid unnecessary overnight hospitalizations.
  • The Pediatric Radiation Therapy Unit is located on the Anschutz Medical Campus at University of Colorado Hospital. Nurses from Children's Colorado provide kid-friendly care for pediatric patients requiring anesthesia during radiation therapy.
  • A special lead-lined room in the new Highly Immune-Compromised Bone Marrow Transplant Unit provides the ability to deliver radioactive therapies (such as MIBG for neuroblastoma) in a safe environment. Previously, patients had to travel out of the Rocky Mountain region to receive this form of treatment.

The 7th floor of our Aurora children's hospital also includes family sleeping rooms and a satellite pharmacy that serves all areas. And because we treat patients from birth up to age 30 with cancer and blood disorders, the Anschutz Medical Campus welcomes patients and their families regardless of age, including adolescents and young adults.
