Kids’ Play Areas
At Children’s Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs, part of our healing process is play. Whether your child is waiting for an appointment, healing in our inpatient rooms or a sibling has come along during a hospital stay, we think kids need room to play. That’s why we have different play areas on four floors in our Colorado Springs hospital.
All of our play areas offer a safe environment where children can engage in age-appropriate play, socialization and self-expression.
Places for creativity and play
Child play areas
Child play areas are staffed by volunteers and open to patients and their families. On the second floor inside the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, there is a play area for patients that allows for safe and imaginative play. On the fourth and fifth floors, there are inpatient play areas that ensure our patients still have room to be playful and move their bodies. The fourth and fifth floor play areas also have panoramic windows, offering breathtaking views of the mountains and Pikes Peak.
Open to patients and their families during the day, these play areas are always staffed by a volunteer and a child life specialist. To play in these play areas, children will need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Creative Play Center
Creative Play is a special area just for siblings of patients. Located on the first floor near the entrance, the Creative Play Center is a safe, supportive environment where siblings can come to play while their brother or sister is receiving care. While it is not child care, this area offers engaging, imaginative play in a supervised setting. This also allows parents to focus on their patient who is receiving care, knowing their other children are in a fun and safe place.
In addition to play, our volunteers also offer optional homework help upon request. Homework help is hosted by our Teachers Loving Children volunteers. All volunteers and staff who supervise children are trained.
The Creative Play Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Outdoor playground
Sometimes kids just need to get outside and move around. Here, we have a dedicated outdoor playground just for our patients. The perfect space to get some fresh air and move your body, the playground is open year-round. It is located through the Creative Play Area on the first floor and is available only to patients and families.
