I don't remember when I decided to be a physician, but whenever it was, I knew from the start I wanted to be in pediatrics. For me, nothing beats the fun of interacting with each child on their developmental level, and watching them grow and change each time we meet. And just as each patient I care for is unique, so is their family. It is important for me to make sure that both parents, child, and siblings understand what is happening, whether that is processing a new diagnosis, understanding treatment, or facing a new challenge along the way. My patients chuckle when I hand them their patient instructions at the end of each visit, calling them "love notes," but I see it as one other way of providing care, in letting them know what I think is important to take away from our meeting so they can best care for themselves or their child.
