Measures of Lung Health in Children with Down Syndrome Research Study

Researchers at Children’s Hospital Colorado want to learn more about lung health in children with Down syndrome.

We are seeking kids and teens with Down syndrome to participate.

Participants will receive financial compensation for their time.

Purpose of the study

We know that children with Down syndrome are more likely to breathe food or liquids into their lungs, which is called aspiration. This can cause an increased risk for pneumonia and long-term breathing problems. We want to learn more about how aspiration affects the lungs and quality of life of children with Down syndrome. This will help us develop new treatments to protect the lungs of people with Down syndrome.

Research details

Your child may qualify for this study if:

• They have a diagnosis of Down syndrome, trisomy 21 or mosaicism
• They have had a swallow study performed in the last two years
• They can walk

Study participants will attend one or two clinic visits. Clinic visits take place at The Anna and John J. Sie Center for Down Syndrome at Children’s Hospital Colorado on Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado and will include the following tests:

• Breathing tests
• Exercise test
• Blood collection
• Questionnaires
