Research funding at a glance

  • Children's Hospital Colorado is part of the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, which received a $48.4 million five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health in 2013. This collaboration aims to accelerate the translation of laboratory discoveries into clinical treatments.
  • In 2013, the University of Colorado Department of Pediatrics (whose doctors practice at Children's Hospital Colorado) was awarded more than $43 million in grants by the National Institutes of Health ranking first in the country. In addition, our own Ron Sokol, MD, is the country's most highly funded pediatric investigator.
  • From 1995 through 2008, almost $9 million in internal grants were awarded to Children's Colorado physicians and nurses for research scholar awards, bridge grants, pilot grants, nursing scholar awards and quality systems improvement awards. Made possible largely through philanthropy, these internal grants allowed our investigators to collect the necessary data to be competitive nationally in their applications for funding from outside agencies.
  • Researchers who were awarded internal investments have, in turn, received more than $45 million in additional peer-reviewed, competitive funding as a result of these internal grants a return on investment of more than five to one.
